I've switched over to vim for quite a while now (over a year now, I think), after being a die-hard gedit user. My productivity has gone way up since, but there's always been something that's bugged me: When you press <Home>, it always goes to the start of the line. Really, I want it to go to the first non-whitespace character, and if it's already there, go to the start of the line (same behaviour as most modern graphical editors). After an unsuccessful twitter appeal, I decided to write my first ever VIM script to do this:

let l:old_col=col(".")
normal ^
let l:new_col=col(".")
if l:old_col == l:new_col
normal 0
endif
endfunction
if !exists("ToggleHome")
command -nargs=0 ToggleHome :call s:toggle_home()
endif
Putting that script in your ~/.vim/plugin directory, and then mapping it with
map <Home> :ToggleHome<CR>
imap <Home> <C-o>:ToggleHome<CR>
gives me my desired behaviour :) It's a pretty naive script, but it does the job.

However I don't know any vim script, and everything I do is just macros and so using the normal vim movements and commands, so I'll still read your script and figure out how it works!

@ulrik: Should that go to the beginning of the line if it's already at the beginning of the line+whitespace? It doesn't seem to for me, and that's what my script does (but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something as simple as that that does the same thing)

You do know that harcore Vim users don't use those keys anyway? :) Just press ^ or 0 depending on what you want.
Arrow keys and other keys outside the alphanumeric part of your keyboard, including Home, End, PageUp, PageDown, Insert and Delete, are a kludge to use once you get the hang of h, j, k, l and the other shortcuts (^, 0, $, Ctrl-U, Ctrl-D, respectively) for navigation.
Using Vim and a trackball (instead of mouse) has saved me from various RSI-like complaints over the years and made me extremely efficient when editing text or code. It is a steep learning curve, but once you get it into your muscle memory, you cannot live without it anymore. :)

In vim, if you prepend a movement key (h j k l ...) with g, you make a movement relative to how the lines are shown graphically.
so, while j takes you to the next line, gj takes you to the next line shown in vim (which can be the continuing of the current line, if it's wrapped).
